What Is GTA VI?

Grand Theft Auto VI is Rockstar Games' first mainline GTA entry since GTA V launched in 2013. After more than a decade of updates and expansions to GTA Online, Rockstar is returning to a fully new single-player open world set in the fictional state of Leonida, modeled on modern-day Florida.

The game's primary setting is Vice City, a fictional version of Miami that first appeared in GTA: Vice City (2002). This version is vastly more detailed, reflecting real urban sprawl, diverse neighborhoods, coastal waterways, swamplands, and rural outskirts stretching far beyond the city limits.

For the first time in the mainline GTA series, one of the lead playable characters is a woman named Lucia. The story follows both Lucia and her partner Jason as they navigate crime and survival across Leonida. Rockstar officially confirmed both characters in the first trailer released in December 2023, and a second trailer released in 2025 expanded on their story and the world they inhabit.

The scope of the game is significantly larger than GTA V. Rockstar has described the world as their most detailed yet, with dynamic weather, an active social-media layer built into the game world, and NPCs who react to and record the player's actions in real time.

Release Date and Supported Platforms

Rockstar Games confirmed GTA VI will release in Fall 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. No exact calendar date has been announced as of mid-2025, but Rockstar has not revised this window. When an exact date is set, Rockstar will announce it first on rockstargames.com and their official social channels.

Platforms confirmed at launch

• PlayStation 5 — compatible with both disc-drive and Digital Edition models
• Xbox Series X — disc and digital; the disc drive is built in
• Xbox Series S — digital only; no disc drive on this model
• PC — no release date announced; expected after the console launch

GTA VI will not release on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Rockstar built the game exclusively for current-generation hardware, and there is no last-gen version planned. If you are still on a previous-generation console, you will need to upgrade to play GTA VI at launch.

A PC release will come eventually — Rockstar has released PC versions of every modern GTA title — but no timeline has been confirmed. PC players should expect a wait of at least several months after the console version ships.

How to Preorder GTA VI on PlayStation or Xbox

Preordering secures your copy, often unlocks early bonuses, and — for digital editions — allows the game to preload onto your console so you can play the moment servers open on launch day rather than waiting for a multi-hour download.

Preorder on PlayStation 5

1. Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5, in the PlayStation App on your phone, or at store.playstation.com.
2. Search for Grand Theft Auto VI.
3. Select your preferred edition — Standard or any special edition Rockstar announces — and tap Preorder.
4. Sony charges your payment method on release day, not at the time of preorder. You can cancel a digital preorder before the charge date through your PSN account settings.
5. The game will appear in your PS5 Library. When Rockstar releases preload files, it will begin downloading automatically if you have Auto-Download enabled in Settings.

Preorder on Xbox Series X/S

1. Open the Microsoft Store on your console, the Xbox app on mobile or PC, or visit xbox.com.
2. Search for Grand Theft Auto VI and select the listing.
3. Choose your edition and click Preorder. Microsoft charges on release day for most digital preorders.
4. Enable Keep my games and apps up to date in Settings so preload files install as soon as they are available.
5. Your preorder will appear in My games and apps with a countdown timer as the release date approaches.

If you prefer a physical disc, major retailers including Amazon and GameStop accept GTA VI preorders. Physical preorders may require a deposit or full payment upfront depending on the retailer and region.

Prepare Your Console Storage and System Firmware

Modern open-world games from Rockstar are among the largest on the market. GTA V shipped at around 90GB and grew considerably with patches over the years. GTA VI is expected to require well over 100GB of storage, though Rockstar has not published a final install size. Clearing space now avoids a scramble on launch day when download servers are under heavy load.

Free up storage on PS5

1. Go to Settings → Storage to see how much space is available on your internal SSD.
2. Select Games and Apps, sort by size, and delete titles you are not actively playing. Highlight a game, press Options, and select Delete. You can always redownload purchased games later at no cost.
3. Move PS4 games to an external USB drive if you want to keep them. PS4 titles can run from external storage; PS5 titles cannot.
4. If your internal SSD is consistently full, install an M.2 NVMe expansion drive (PCIe Gen 4 recommended for best performance) in the expansion slot beneath the removable side panel. Sony's support page lists compatible drive specifications.

Free up storage on Xbox Series X/S

1. Press the Xbox button, go to Profile and system → Settings → System → Storage.
2. Select Manage storage, highlight games you no longer play, and choose Uninstall all to remove both the game and its add-ons.
3. The Xbox Series S has 512GB of internal storage compared to 1TB on the Series X, so Series S owners are more likely to need to manage space proactively.
4. Add a Seagate Storage Expansion Card to the proprietary slot on the back of either console for seamless extra storage that runs at full SSD speed.

Update your system firmware now

Launch days often bring new system updates that are required before playing a new title. Installing your firmware update in advance takes one variable off your plate.

• PS5: Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings → Update System Software.

What Is New in GTA VI

Based on Rockstar's official trailers and confirmed details released through mid-2025, GTA VI introduces several substantial changes from GTA V:

• Two playable protagonists: Lucia and Jason can be switched between freely during open-world play, similar to the three-character system in GTA V but centered on a partnered storyline. Co-op story elements have been shown in trailers but full mechanics have not been detailed.
• A larger, living world: The map spans Vice City and all of Leonida — suburbs, wetlands, smaller towns, and long rural stretches. Rockstar describes it as their most detailed open world to date, with dynamic flooding, seasonal weather changes, and roads that shift in condition over time.
• Social media woven into gameplay: NPCs carry phones, react to events in real time, and can capture and share footage of what the player is doing within the game's own social network. Viral moments spread through the in-game world and affect NPC behavior and law enforcement response.
• Expanded economy and businesses: Trailers suggest deeper property ownership, business management, and financial systems than in GTA V, though Rockstar has not released full details on these mechanics.
• GTA Online continues separately: Rockstar confirmed that GTA Online will carry forward as its own evolving product alongside GTA VI. Existing players will not lose their progress, though exact transfer terms and what carries over have not been fully specified.

Create Your Rockstar Social Club Account

A free Rockstar Games Social Club account is required for both single-player and GTA Online in GTA VI. Creating one takes about five minutes and is best done before launch day, when Rockstar's servers may be under heavy load from millions of players registering simultaneously.

1. Go to socialclub.rockstargames.com and click Sign In, then Register if you do not have an account.
2. Choose a username carefully — it is public-facing in GTA Online lobbies and cannot be changed easily. Avoid using your real name or personal information.
3. Enter your email address and create a strong, unique password. Use a password manager if you have one.
4. Check your inbox and click the verification link Rockstar sends. Your account will not be fully active until this step is complete.
5. Enable two-factor authentication under Settings → Security. GTA Online accounts, especially those with rare vehicles and in-game currency, are frequently targeted by phishing attempts and credential-stuffing attacks. 2FA stops most of these.
6. Under Settings → Linked Accounts, connect your PSN or Xbox account. This link is what allows the game to recognize your platform subscription and carry over progress between the platform and Rockstar's systems.

If you already have a Social Club account from playing GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2, simply log in, verify that your linked platform account is still active, and confirm your email address is current. You do not need to create a new account.

What to Do While You Wait for Launch

If GTA VI has not released yet by the time you read this, here is how to make the wait useful:

• Play GTA V's story mode if you have not finished it. The narrative, mission design, and open-world structure set the tone for what GTA VI will build on. GTA V is available at low cost on current-generation consoles and is frequently included in subscription libraries.
• Accumulate GTA Online currency: Shark Cards (real-money GTA$) and in-game earnings you build up in GTA Online are expected to carry forward, subject to Rockstar's final transfer terms. Grinding Heists and businesses now could give you a head start in whatever GTA Online becomes with GTA VI.
• Watch only official sources: Rockstar's official YouTube channel and rockstargames.com are the only reliable sources for confirmed GTA VI details. Third-party leak videos and "insider" posts are overwhelmingly fabricated. Stick to official materials to avoid misinformation about features, release dates, or platform availability.
• Check your internet connection: Day-one patches for major titles can be 10 to 20GB or more. If you are on a slower connection, test your download speed and consider downloading during off-peak hours. Wired ethernet connections are more stable than Wi-Fi for large game downloads.
• Set up a launch-day notification: Both the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store allow you to enable notifications for preordered titles. You will receive an alert when preload is available and again when the game unlocks.
